Marengo by Melissa Doyle

Features

ARTIST NOTES: The canvas is alive with motion. Towering waves crash with raw, thunderous force. The ocean here is a deep, steel blue - cold, untamed, and immense. Foaming whitecaps surge toward the shore in rolling sets, each one exploding into a symphony of spray and salt. My feet are buried ankle-deep in the shockingly icy water, which curls around my toes with every pulse of the tide. It bites at the skin, but in a way that wakes every nerve, grounding me completely in the present. The scent of salt is rich and sharp, and the roar of the surf drowns out everything else. Here, nature is not gentle - it’s grand, untouchable, and alive.

Melissa Doyle is a Melbourne-based artist working primarily in acrylic and occasionally oil, known for her strikingly realistic depictions of the ocean, landscapes, and everyday scenes inspired by nature and travel. With a strong foundation in traditional painting techniques, Melissa brings both technical mastery and emotional resonance to her work.

Her artistic training spans internationally. She studied at the Benad Atelier in Munich, where she learned classical trompe l’oeil techniques and completed a large-scale, 1.4m x 2m dimensional mural - meticulously scaled up from an A2 design. She also holds a City & Guilds certification in Paint Effects and Interior Décor, and further refined her skills through online mentorship with renowned Australian artist Scott Christensen, studying his Paint the Ocean program.

Melissa’s work is guided by a desire to make viewers feel as though they are truly there - immersed in the scene and emotionally connected to the subject. Whether depicting the delicate shimmer of the sea or the quiet beauty of a natural landscape, her paintings offer a moment of stillness and reflection.

She has held several solo exhibitions and was a Glover Prize finalist in 2010, one of Australia’s most prestigious landscape art awards.
