Onetangi by Melissa Doyle

ARTIST NOTES: When I traveled here to Onetangi, it was a last minute decision on my Uncle’s advice…

YOU MUST GO THERE, you will LOVE IT..!

I rushed to catch the last ferry from Auckland. I had no accommodation booked, traveling solo, and I was running out of battery.

By the skin of my teeth, I made it.
I booked an AirBnB up on a hill with breathtaking views over the warm and welcoming ocean.

I immediately booked a second night.

I was trying to take it all in, and I was filled with an uncontainable excitement!

As soon as I arrived, I ran down and went for a swim.

The gentle rhythm of the warm, crystal-clear water lapping softly against the shore felt like a soothing heartbeat, steady and comforting.

I saw a guy strolling towards the water, totally naked, totally carefree, enjoying this amazing place, I giggled to myself…

Above, the sky was a gentle canvas of grey clouds, with a hint of blue peeking through.

There was a simple joy here, a quiet thrill in being present - in discovering a place I’ve never been to before, and letting myself just be, explore and enjoy.

No rush, no noise, just the calm, the waves, the sand, and the quiet beauty of an incredible place I must and will go back to.

Melissa Doyle is a Melbourne-based artist working primarily in acrylic and occasionally oil, known for her strikingly realistic depictions of the ocean, landscapes, and everyday scenes inspired by nature and travel. With a strong foundation in traditional painting techniques, Melissa brings both technical mastery and emotional resonance to her work.

Her artistic training spans internationally. She studied at the Benad Atelier in Munich, where she learned classical trompe l’oeil techniques and completed a large-scale, 1.4m x 2m dimensional mural - meticulously scaled up from an A2 design. She also holds a City & Guilds certification in Paint Effects and Interior Décor, and further refined her skills through online mentorship with renowned Australian artist Scott Christensen, studying his Paint the Ocean program.

Melissa’s work is guided by a desire to make viewers feel as though they are truly there - immersed in the scene and emotionally connected to the subject. Whether depicting the delicate shimmer of the sea or the quiet beauty of a natural landscape, her paintings offer a moment of stillness and reflection.

She has held several solo exhibitions and was a Glover Prize finalist in 2010, one of Australia’s most prestigious landscape art awards.
